The AFS Returnees (AFS Alumni) in Malaysia trace their roots back to 1959, when the first participants returned home after a year-long exchange programme in the U.S. These pioneering Malaysians (from what was then Malaya) had embarked on their exchange journey in 1958, just a year after the country gained independence.
Over the course of nearly seventy years, this intercultural exchange programme has played a significant role in nurturing numerous prominent individuals who have gone on to become influential leaders in various community sectors. The esteemed roster of AFS Returnees in Malaysia includes well-known figures such as local celebrity Datuk Yasmin Yusuf, the late Dato’ Mahadzir Lokman and the highly talented singer and songwriter Yuna, among many other notable individuals.
