The AFS Returnees (AFS Alumni) in Malaysia trace their roots back to 1959, when the first participants returned home after a year-long exchange programme in the U.S. These pioneering Malaysians (from what was then Malaya) had embarked on their exchange journey in 1958, just a year after the country gained independence.

Over the course of nearly seventy years, this intercultural exchange programme has played a significant role in nurturing numerous prominent individuals who have gone on to become influential leaders in various community sectors. The esteemed roster of AFS Returnees in Malaysia includes well-known figures such as local celebrity Datuk Yasmin Yusuf, the late Dato’ Mahadzir Lokman and the highly talented singer and songwriter Yuna, among many other notable individuals.

Overview

We need you to stay engaged with AFS Malaysia because the broader our reach, the more individuals we can connect with and the greater our mission’s impact on changing the world. It’s more crucial than ever for the world to have globally-aware and competent individuals who can dismantle the growing barriers between different people and cultures. AFS Alumni, whether living in communities across Malaysia or abroad, are vital in expanding our reach by sharing their experiences and the AFS mission with others.
