Our History

AFS began as a volunteer ambulance corps created in 1915. We started as a wartime humanitarian aid organization into a groundbreaking international secondary school exchange, volunteer and intercultural learning organization with a bold mission: to help build a more peaceful world by promoting understanding among cultures.

Over 60 years later, AFS Malaysia continues to respond to the needs of an increasingly complex world, offering programmes abroad in 40+ countries and hosting international students from more than 80 countries. True to the spirit of our founders, these life-changing intercultural learning programmes are made possible by the dedicated work of our AFS Volunteers.

The AFS Effect

AFS programmes foster transformation that lasts a lifetime. Today’s exchange students are tomorrow’s changemakers: diplomats; thought leaders; influencers in the international business and non-profit communities. Every new exchange student is another global citizen in progress—an individual primed to help build a more just and peaceful world.

And the impact doesn’t stop with the students. Host families’ lives are transformed by new members from across the globe and host communities gain greater cultural diversity.

That’s THE AFS EFFECT.

Our Leadership

Yayasan AFS Antarabudaya Malaysia thrives on the collective efforts of a diverse and dedicated community. At its core, the organization is shaped by the strategic guidance of its Board of Directors and the operational excellence of the National Office staff. However, the true spirit and reach of AFS Malaysia are amplified by its extensive network of passionate individuals and supportive institutions. This includes: Dedicated Volunteers: The backbone of AFS, volunteers contribute countless hours to support programmes, mentor students and facilitate intercultural learning. Engaged Returnees: Alumni of AFS programmes, these individuals bring invaluable firsthand experience and enthusiasm, often becoming volunteers, advocates and mentors themselves. Welcoming Host Families: These generous families open their homes and hearts to international students, providing a nurturing environment and immersive cultural experience. Supportive Host Schools: Educational institutions play a crucial role by integrating international students into their academic and social fabric, fostering understanding within their student body. Malaysian Participants Abroad: Malaysian students embarking on AFS programmes overseas become ambassadors for their country and return with broadened perspectives, enriching their local communities. International Students in Malaysia: Students from around the world who choose Malaysia for their AFS experience contribute to the local cultural tapestry and build lasting global connections. Together, these interconnected groups form a vibrant ecosystem that empowers AFS Malaysia to fulfill its mission of promoting intercultural understanding and building a more peaceful and just world.
