Chapter visit to Kuantan on 16-17 April 2014
On 16th April 2014, the NO team consisting of Chapter & Volunteer Development and PR staff joined the Kuantan Chapter for a school Roadshow as part of their chapter visit. We met at SMJK (C) Hwa Lian, Mentakab. Around 200 students turned up for our talk at the school hall and we discovered that the school is the best in the area in terms of academic and co-curriculum and incidentally one who is most supportive of the AFS Program; championed by one teacher by the name of Ms. Ratha. At the school premises, each of us was interviewed by a teacher Mr. Lim, who writes part time for China Press and Nanyang Siang Pau. He intends to write an article for AFS and the programs offered. After lunch served on the school premises, we then headed to Kuantan.
Community Placement Organization (CPO) Visits
The day continued with CPO visits led by Wong Choo Ching, Vice President and her husband, Mr. Liyu Tuck Fatt, a volunteer. Chapter President, Wendy Yap met us at the first stop, Rapha’s Children Home. The feedback received by the CSP participants was very positive. The next CPO was Rumah Harapan. The centre offers English lessons for free to just anyone who is interested. Since Sarah Volk, our CSP participant has started volunteering, the enrolment has increased and the locals like the idea of a “mat salleh” teaching English! We had dinner with some Kuantan Volunteers at a nearby seafood restaurant that night.
On the 2nd day, we visited Assunta Social Center, a new CPO is hosting 2 CSP participants from Germany. At the time of visit, there were 6 Myanmar refugee children and 3 under 10 year old siblings. They were seen playing and interacting with our participants.
JPN Visit on 17th April
Meeting with the JPN Pahang officers went very smoothly with them showing AFS strong support. They gave a few tips on how to promote programs and insisted on a meeting with the hosted students and their host families together. They were happy to meet AFS staff personnel and look forward to strengthen collaboration. The meeting ended with both sides exchanging gifts.
