Describe your career
I’m attached to Group Corporate Communications division at TM International (TMI). TMI was the investment arm of Telekom Malaysia, but now a public listed company of its own with operations in 9 countries. Part of my work is to liaise with colleagues within the Corporate Communications division from other countries. Thanks to my AFS experience and international exposure. I am able to take up this challenge.

If you did not go on AFS, what job will you be likely do right now?
That’s tricky, I just can’t imagine what I would be doing! Maybe a lawyer [but must be unhappy by now :( ] or a journalist.

When / where / why did you go on AFS ?
I spent a year in Rauma, Finland in 1992-1993. At my local secondary school, we always had an exchange students and I was curios and interested. Also my school principle then, Pn.Fatimah Mohamed was a returnee and promoted AFS Program at the school.

I still feel very lucky that I had that once in a lifetime opportunity! Later after my AFS year, I studied and lived abroad for a couple of years but nothing beats my AFS experience…it was the best year of my life! I totally recommend this experience!!!

How can you best play a part in AFS Malaysia?
Since I came back from my AFS year, I have been involved by volunteering at arrival or departure camps, liaison person, involved in chapter activities and my family have also hosted few students. I was also involved with the local chapter in Arnhem, Nederlands, when I was a student there. I also spent a few years working for the national office. I would like to get more involved in AFS in terms of counseling, in camps or assisting other events.

50 years of AFS in Malaysia, what is your view?
AFS Malaysia has come a long way. Now hosting and sending more students. For a multiracial country, AFS Malaysia plays an important role.
