23/5/2007 - AFS Belgium & Australia students met the Prime Minister of Malaysia

Recently, AFS Antarabudaya Malaysia took part in a Rd Show in conjunction to the Teacher’s Day in Malaysia. The Rd show was organised and is a joint venture by a local newspaper agency known as Utusan and the Ministry of Education.

The Teachers Day celebration was held in Johor Bahru this year from the 15 to the 17th May 2007 at the Persada Convention Centre. The Teachers Day was held on the 16th May 2007.

AFS Antarabudaya Malaysia set up the booth to promote High School Programmes and Educators Exchange Programmes. We was very lucky to have one of the Educators Ms Shobha Devi who went to Egypt on Educators Exchange to stop by the booth and share us with her photos and materials of her exchange days in Egypt.

As for part of the attraction, we also invited two of our current AFS host students Beata from Belgium & Monica from Australia. Both students are currently hosted in Johor Bahru. Both came dressed in school informs and was instantly the main attraction for many teachers and students to stop by to find out about AFS!

The Minister of Education came to officiate the event and visited all the exhibitors booth. Being the Patron of AFS Antarabudaya Malaysia, Datuk Hishamuddin took some time to stop by the AFS booth to have a little chat with our Student Ms Bieta from Belgium about her experience in Malaysia and Ms Shobha on her experience on Educators exchange to Egypt.

On the 16th May – Teacher’s Day, the Prime Minister of Malaysia came to officiate the event. A big celebration was held with dancing and local school performances in conjunction to the event. Beata and Monica who was in school uniform caught the Prime Minister’s Special Officers attention and they were invited to take pictures with the Prime Minister.

After a long wait, Monica and Beata finally got the opportunity to meet the Prime Minister and Minister of Education for a brief chat and Photo Session. The Prime Minister, Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Abdullah Badawi also took the opportunity to give Monica ( AFS Australia) a local Malay Name ” Mina” which means the ‘Faithful’ since if he found out that Bieta has a local Malay name as well. Beata’s Malay name is Siti.
