16/3/2007 - Scholarship Available to Costa Rica!
2 full scholarships are available to apply to Go Abroad with AFS to Costa Rica.
Kay Hashim & Bien Mei Nien Scholarship named after two former AFS National Representatives will be awarded to 2 lucky students to go on AFS Exchange to Costa Rica for 1 year!
Datin Kay Hashim is one of the very first AFS National Representatives that started off AFS Antarabudaya Malaysia. In 1964, Datin Kay Hashim became the National Representative of AFS, or then known as American Field Service. At that time AFS was still a small society, and the AFS Returnees were all still young. During her time as National Representative, AFS grew, and she has personally benefited tremendously from getting to know many young Malaysians who remain fixed in her memory as individuals; vibrant, dedicated, personable, and as varied as any group of people could be, and yet with a commonality of experience that is recognizable in an AFS’er anywhere in the world. Having lost touch with most of the members of over the years, and with AFS as a whole, she is very happy to be remembered, and invited to become re-acquainted with the new AFS Antarabudaya Malaysia. Her first observation is that while the scope (and the budget) of AFS has changed tremendously, the essence of AFS has not. While the goal of achieving world peace remains elusive, the goal stands firm.
She is delighted to offer an AFS Scholarship under her name; Kay Hashim Scholarship to a deserving student to experience the AFS experience in Costa Rica.
”Any of us who have been involved with AFS will never forget the experience or the aim it sets out to achieve!”Kay Hashim

Read below on what Costa Rica has to offer you for a year exchange!
What Costa Rica has to offer you? Costa Rica is Spanish for the rich coast and you’ll discover that it’s just another way of saying “paradise.” This lush country is located between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea with 755 miles of coastline. More than 30 percent of the country, including its famous rain forest, is set aside as national parkland or protected areas. Costa Rica has 500 bird species and 8,000 plant species that have been discovered so far, majestic volcanoes, countless rivers, lakes, and waterfalls, as well as some of the most beautiful beaches you’ll ever see. The country combines rural towns, forests, farmlands, and small cities to create a laid back yet exciting ambiance. It is also home to proud, friendly, and peaceful citizens, known as Ticos (men) and Ticas (women).
Costa Rica is one of a handful of nations in the world that does not have an army. Instead, it spends heavily on health care and education, enabling Costa Ricans to enjoy an unparalleled quality of life in Latin America. Families are very close and meals typically contain rice, beans, corn, meat, chicken, or fish. You and your new Costa Rican friends will probably socialize in groups, enjoying movies, dancing, parties, sports, or community clubs. The country hosts more than 350 students from 21 countries each year and has more than 50 years of experience in the AFS Network.
