12/11/2009 - 22nd AFS World Congress, Kuala Lumpur
From 20-24 October 2009 AFS leaders from around the globe gathered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, for the 22nd annual AFS World Congress.
This yearly leadership conference gathered approximately 180 delegates from 50 different countries to review our past history, take stock of our current realities and move towards a bright future as an interdependent network of aligned AFS organizations.
This World Congress was a departure from past annual leadership meetings in that the format was extremely interactive and the theme “Bridging Cultures: Acting on the Vision” meant that significant work was done by delegates to identify change levers, form work groups, and create action plans on topics to move the Network towards AFS’s Vision 2020, which was approved earlier this year. Special emphasis was placed on Partner-to-Partner business meetings and an Accountability Marketplace to update delegates on the status of various thematic areas as well as on the realities of Partner country organizations.
As the host of the World Congress, AFS Malaysia arranged numbers of exciting events such as an outing to a local craft center (complete with batik fashion show) and the chance to see some of Kuala Lumpur’s top sites, an optional evening with a Malaysian host family, early morning exercises with a local flavor (Malaysian dancercize, tai chi, etc.), daily Congress Newsletters with detailed interviews and local items of interest, receptions at local embassies, and a spectacular Gala Closing Dinner at the Hotel Nikko KL.
We thank AFS Malaysia volunteers for the excellent job that they did to ensure the smoothness of this event!
