20/5/2009 - Scholarship opportunity for AFSers: Study “Intercultural Management and Communication” at Merkur International University in Karlsruhe, Germany
We are excited to inform you about a new cooperation, this time benefitting AFS returnees. Thanks to the Merkur International University Karlsruhe (IFH), AFS Germany is able to offer a scholarship for tuition in a 3 year-bachelor degree programme at a private international university in Germany from now on.
This opportunity is especially interesting for AFS returnees that have been on a program to Germany or have otherwise developed a high proficiency of written and spoken German, as the first semesters will be taught in German (the programme then switches to English). The scholarship opportunity will be granted for the programme start in September 2009 for the first time and will be upheld for the following years. The application deadline is June 30.
Please forward this information to returnees or other AFS volunteers you deem interested. The information below is compiled in the attached pdf document for easy distribution, which also contains all details on the application process and all formal requirements. Note that these latter details are presented in German.

More information on the “Intercultural Management and Communication” Programme
Anybody wanting to work as intercultural intermediary or strike successful business deals needs more than just management skills – a deep understanding for the cultural background of the other negotiating party is also a must. AFSers know that each culture does things differently. In our tightly knit global world these differences have a substantial impact on business.
A deeper understanding of these differences can be developed- in the bachelor’s programme “Intercultural Management and Communication” at Merkur International University in Karlsruhe, Germany. The programme combines standard business modules with cultural anthropology and business geography.
The bachelor’s degree in “Intercultural Management and Communication” will prepare students for a global career: as country specialist in a bank, embassy employee abroad, change manager or head of human resources in an international corporation, to name just a few examples.
From the third semester onwards, instruction is predominantly in English and a second foreign language such as Arabic or Chinese is mandatory. The first semesters will be taught in German.
