6/2/2009 - 40 students said YES to 6 months exchange program

Embassy Staff wish “Bon Voyage” to 2009 YES Students at a Pizza Party

On the January 12th, US Embassy of KL hosted a farewell pizza party for the 40 outbound Malaysian Youth Exchange & Study (YES) students who were leaving for the US. The YES program, which is funded by the Dept. of State, enables 40 Malaysian high school graduates each year to go to the US, live with families, and attend local high schools.

It has been a great success in previous years and this is the 6th time for the program in Malaysia. Malaysia have sent over 130 students on the program including 13 hearing impaired students. The group is truly representative of the diversity of Malaysia.

Ambassador Keith and his family joined the party along with other Embassy officials and their family members. Along with YES alumni, they mingled with the students and shared information and anecdotes their U.S. destinations and U.S. culture. The students could hardly contain their excitement at being so warmly received.

Media from the National News Agency, Chinese Press and local TV Station, NTV 7 were present and conducted interviews.

All 40 students will return back to Malaysia in July 2009.
