A total number of 30 volunteers of AFS Malaysia was selected to attend the AFS Camp Facilitator’s Workshop was held on 12th- 13th July 2008 in Carlton Holiday Resort, Shah Alam. The workshop was held mainly to have a pool of well trained camp facilitators as well as to improve service and delivery of camp facilitating of AFS camps
Conducting this camp allows the volunteers to determine the role of each camp facilitator, and to come up with a standard guidelines and modules for all AFS Orientation camps available in the Sending and Hosting Department.
The camp was organized by chief camp facilitator, an AFS volunteer for 8 years, Jason Lee who is also a Board Member in the effort of training AFS volunteers in facilitating camp. Jason was assisted by Annie Yap (Assistant National Director), Azimah Abas (Volunteer Development Manager), Kuhan Chelvanathan (Hosting Executive) from the office as well as Gee, former staff and participant on the Strength through Diversity program to Italy.
The prime goal of the workshop is to drive AFS volunteers to embrace the core values of AFS Volunteers – of Sensitivity, Tolerance, Empathy, Diversity and Integrity. Among the objectives of this camp is to be able create a pool of well-trained and briefed camp facilitators which will be able to lead and conduct AFS camps.
Throughout the weekend, the participants learnt about team work, to learn to be able to work together as a group. Among the sessions conducted are Ice Breaking, Presentation Skills, Risk and Crisis Management, and Conducting AFS Camps and Orientations where participants worked in a group to develop a standard module to be used in the future orientations.
Also presented during the workshop was Strength through Diversity exchange participants Elisabeth Hanzl and Max Schrems from Austria, Ise de Smet from Belgium, and Cordula Rischmuller from Germany
“It was a very useful camp,” says Khoo Hsien Yew, Japan Returnee of Year Program, 2005 who also hosted Ise from Beligium. “It sharpens our observations and presentation skills and I learnt to be a better and more efficient volunteer for AFS. I also felt that this camp has enabled everyone to build a stronger network within the AFS family” Hsien Yew believed that he has learnt more about leadership and the nature of orientation camps in AFS, of which, he inevitably speaks for the others.
